Meet the Team

Carter Trey Smith

Director

A writer, director and producer, Carter founded Smith Film House in 2022. Since then, he has directed 5 short films through the company. He raised five thousand dollars for the short film Artist Block which premiered at the Milan Shorts Film Festival.

Rosana Lucia

Producer

A Georgia-local and former child actor, Rosana has been surrounded by film her whole life. organization, communication and compensation are her strong suits. Rosana believes in paying people for their time and creating a genuine and creative film.

Evan Quarles

Writer

From landscaper to daycare worker to herpetologist, Evan has plenty of life experience to write about. Spending 3 years landscaping, he met a small group of workers that inspired the events of Fish. His goal in writing the film was to create representation for a group that has never been seen in film.

Director’s Vision Statement

Growing up in a small southern town, I was always taught to keep my emotions to myself and remain stoic when problems arise. This is problematic when it comes to situations with complicated solutions. When remaining stoic does not work, fight or flight kicks in. Fish is about coping with difficult issues. Both Dustin and Fish cope with their problems by running away; Dustin physically and Fish mentally. I have always wanted to tell a story that showcases my Texas roots and culture, while also critiquing it. This film is about when conflict avoidance gets in the way of living your life.

The Characters

DUSTIN

At 19, Dustin planned on attending the University of Texas in Austin with a major in Design, but like many others, he was rejected. Unsure of what to do with his life, his high school sweetheart gives him an ultimatum. Dustin runs away from both her and the city and goes out the country to live with his tough love dad.

FISH

Fish drinks 12 PBRs a day at minimum and tells at least double the amount of fabricated life stories. He has never actively searched for anything in his life. Since his high school “Glory Days” came to an end, he has settled for each thing that came his way. Once he started landscaping, it became his only purpose.

ZOE

Zoe has lived in the small town her whole life and has only known the same people her whole life. She has grown tired of these people and wants to meet more outgoing and edgy 20 somethings. She tends to hide behind her brash, rude personality. She feels more comfortable when she sees the irony and sarcasm in each situation.
